The Complete Father Brown Stories Centaurus Classics edition by G K Chesterton Literature Fiction eBooks
The Wordsworth Classics edition of "The Complete Father Brown Stories" (ISBN 978-1-85326-003-2) has 797 pages (not 304 as Amazon reports) and contains 53 Father Brown stories, including all five published collections complete, and also "The Vampire of the Village," "The Donnington Affair," and "Father Brown solves the Donnington Affair." The only Father Brown story I have heard of which is not given here is "The Mask of Midas" (that's easily available online by the way). The book only cost $5 new and delivered by Amazon Prime. I don't think most folks will want to spend more than triple this for an edition that may contain one additional story.NOTE: My copy has copyright dates 1992 and 2006, and the copyright page reads, "This more complete edition published 2006." Amazon's bibliographic info seems to reflect the older printing. Wordsworth and similar publishers have the bad habit of retaining the same ISBN when they issue a truly new edition.

The Complete Father Brown Stories Centaurus Classics edition by G K Chesterton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I don't know what they are, but there are letters and signs attached to the end of words throughout the body of the text . I read one story and was able to decipher the meaning of the words, for the most part, but found it extremely distracting and irritating. When I started the second story and realized it was going to continue throughout the entire book, I gave up. Love Fr Brown, hate this kindle edition. I have found this before in other kindle books, but not to the extend it exists in this one. This is not poor editing, I fear, but something wrong with the electronic process itself. Even though it was only $1.06, I am returning it for a refund because it is so frustrating.
Wasn't the case with the version provided by Mahon Classics ASIN B01HE5UE0O which rather ticked me off. Rather than buying the incomplete version get "The Complete Father Brown Stories" ASIN B01ETZN9RC published by Centaur Classics instead as it definitely offers more bang for the buck!
I've read other works of Chesterton, Father Brown is certainly easier than some of his other titles. I became aware of "Father Brown" through the PBS television series of that name. An unassuming Roman Catholic priest, the stories often intersect Brown caring for his flock, caring for people.
I very much enjoyed Chesterton's descriptions of people, of places, and how the stories evolved.
Though these are all "short" stories, there are a great number of them. There were times I simply needed a break, but that is an advantage to "short" stories, you can set it aside and come back to a new one days or even weeks later.
I love Father Brown. These are short stories, so the characters are not always going to be well developed, though some are surprisingly so, given that they return in multiple stories. Fr. Brown is intriguing and does a bit of teaching along the way. If you like Chesterton, you will like these stories.
These long and winding stories are set in England shortly before and shortly after World War I. The quiet little priest who doesn't miss a trick bears little resemblance to the Father Brown amiably portrayed by Mark Williams in the British TV series set in post-WW II England, which is currently being broadcast on PBS affiliates. Chesterton's original Father Brown does not appear to be burdened with the minutia of parish management; in fact, his official role with the church is never clear. But that leaves him time to be at the right place, at the right time, to solve involved mysteries. This is quiet reading. It works very well after a stressful day to bring you to a calm place. If you fall asleep while reading, that's okay, because you won't be bored, just calmed.
I discovered GK Chesterton's work about a year ago. Then, earlier this year, I found the Father Brown mysteries on Netflix. And very recently I found the book! The TV series and the book have very little in common. The book is much deeper, richer, and more entertaining (the complexity of the mysteries) than the TV show. Loved this collection! I did also enjoy the TV series, but the stories were somehow turned into "cozy mysteries" which is not a bad thing, just different from the book. I've since picked up quite a stash of GK Chesterton's stories. They are not all like the Father Brown mysteries, but entertaining in their own way. Plus, the author has a delightful, poetic way of describing "atmosphere" in his work. Just delicious.
I have been reading Agatha Christie mysteries for years and noted in one of the biogrqphical sketches about her that she and Chesterton were contemporaries and collaborators. So when I finished a "Complete Collection" of Christie works which wss nowhere near complete, I decided to give Father Brown a try.
Based on another review, I understand that three key works are not included in this "complete" collection and while that is disappointing, I feel that I have already gotten my 99-cents worth. I have been reading this book for weeks...usually a story or two a night...and, according to my , I'm still only 46% through the collection.
So far I have been enthralled with Father Brown, a rumpled and humble version of Hercule Poirot. While Poirot is tidy, arrogant and opinionated, Father Brown is self-deprecating, courteous and quiet. But Father Brown's mind, like Poirot's, is a steel trap. And, like Poirot, Father Brown has a way of circumventing the obvious to zone in on hidden reality. Anyone who is a fan of Poirot certainly must be a fan of Father Brown.
The other reviewer who identified the missing works not included in this collection also recommended the "Complete Father Brown Mysteries [annotated,...]" and I assume that means the three missing works are included. While I'm happy with this version, I suspect I'll spend another 99-cents to get the annotated version in order to finish the entire Father Brown collection. I strongly recommend Father Brown and suggest that the annotated version might be a better choice for the same price.
