Big Sky edition by Phil Cuthbertson Literature Fiction eBooks

Our story begins two boys Don and Alastair who are living in a distant future where technology is almost gone. They manage to get a laptop working and discover the diary of their ancestors!

The diary tells the story of the family of Will and Chrissie McGregor and their sons Alan and Sandy, from Stornoway, Scotland, who make the long summer's journey to Glastonbury, England for a music festival. Along the way there they see people getting sick with a serious flu and here rumors about an epidemic which seems to have struck England. However they came a long way to see the festival so they just put it down to a passing flu. However things take a sudden turn for the worse as most of the musicians die before the festival and panic sets in as more and more people fall ill. They awake the morning after to find themselves alone with the dead and a mad escaping crowd. Eventually they are left utterly alone. They begin the long journey back home by foot and requisitioned vehicles and along the way their family grows as they pick up other survivors and add them to their family. They will face crazed and heartless survivors, illness, a fanatical religious group, and the stress of traveling the length of England in a dead country. There is happiness, sorrow, tears, hope, and laughter as this growing family heads home to start a new life in an empty world. By some lucky coincidence this new world will be full of redheads whose recessive genes allowed them to survive the terrible plague.

In the future the two boys share their story of a new society which has grown up from these survivors and we learn how even after all this time there is division and possibly war in the future between clans of survivors. Don and Alastair hope that if they share this story of great struggle and perseverance of their ancestor's, disaster may be avoided.

I really liked this story! Though considering I have brown hair I felt a little left out.^>^ The author did a great job of developing characters which I came to love and using witty and engaging dialogue. The story did seem to be a little slow at times but the author spaced the "exciting events" in a manner that made the book enjoyable. I felt like I really got a sense for what it would be like to struggle through the mayhem of panic and yet hold onto hope for a better future. Great book!

Big Sky edition by Phil Cuthbertson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I enjoyed the characters in this novel. The story was one of survival and a long trek to get back home from Glastonbury after the plague kills nearly 95 percent of the population. There are no zombies in this book. There are a couple of bad guys but they don't cause too much mayhem.
The story is told in increments as young people in the future are reading the diary of one of the plague survivors. In the present day, there are hints that some of the problems people have always had in society haven't disappeared. Human nature is human nature.
The story ended abruptly; there must be a sequel coming.
For folks fascinated by "The Stand," this story will make your day. A very interesting tale about what happens when a plague comes to the world from an English and Scottish viewpoint, and how things might go a century and a half or so down the road. A charming group of humans and a delightful collie dog make up the cast.
What a great book of survival and family and what a cool way of telling the story!

The book actually has two main story lines - that of the family who lived during the time that the plague hit and their descendents, who found the journal telling the story on an old computer fifty years later. It is very interesting to see the reactions of the descendents when they start to figure out who the people are in the original story and how it relates to their world today.

Will and Chrissie McGregor, from Stornoway, Scotland, have taken their two sons, Alan and Sandy, to Glastonbury, England for a huge music festival. Think Woodstock or, current day, Bonnaroo for a comparison if you are in the US. A week long festival of camping out, vendors selling food, drink, and of course, lots of great music. The McGregor's are excited to get to set up a day earlier than normal (the organizers opened the gates to try to cut down on the traffic issues on the first day of the festival) and have walked in with their tent and set up their camping spot in the family area. Sandy is especially happy because there is a girl his age, Neon, that he can't take his eyes off and just his luck, her family is camping right next to them! Both families had had some difficulties in getting to Glastonbury - lots of car wrecks had backed up traffic - and everyone around them was sneezing and coughing, even dying from illnesses. But, the Health Officials said it was just the normal flu and not to be concerned (I think we have all learned from these books that if an offical says not to worry that it means to run for the hills!).

The next day, the festival is canceled due to the flu spreading and more deaths. Neon's family leaves first as they have already packed up for their trip home to Bristol before the McGregors' wake up. They have such difficulty that Fred, her father, calls to warn the McGregors to turn back and stay at Glastonbury because of the chaos and rioting.

The rest of the book tells of the journey of the family to get back to Stornoway, along with other survivors that they pick up along the way, and the extreme difficulties that they have getting home.

What I LOVED The style of writing with flashbacks between the McGregors in 2010 and the descendents in 2060. Don and Alastair (the descendents) excitement as they are drawn into the story and hints of what their life is like 50 years later. And, the way that we start to see how Alan, Sandy, Neon, and the rest of the characters tie into their history.

I also loved what I would consider the realistic journey that they would have to make to get home. It isn't easy at all and the 700 - 800 miles take them FOREVER to get there.

The reason why the McGregors and the other survivors lived - I can say that the UK would have more survivors than anywhere else in the world! The definition of family and how they added to theirs, the teamwork, the fact that the kids had a large voice in what course the group took to get home.

A well written book that MUST have a sequel that I am anxiously waiting for it to be published! Pick Big Sky up today - you won't be disappointed...
